The aim of the author’s study is focused on educational sightseeing at the level of academic education. Education in the field of sightseeing takes place in the following majors: tourism and recreation, related fields, geography, and history. The subject of this study is the curriculum of the sightseeing course in the field of tourism and recreation, which is conducted at the Institute of Management and Social Affairs of the University of the National Education Commission in Kraków. The publication was compiled through an analysis of scientific studies, as well as observations of the didactic process, experiences, and conclusions drawn
from the author’s work with students. The national studies course is implemented in the 5th semester in the form of lectures and exercises. Integrated with these classes are regional field exercises, which take place in the 6th semester. The topics of both courses, resulting from the learning objectives in terms of knowledge and skills, form several blocks: the theory of sightseeing, the methodology of sightseeing, regionalism in sightseeing, the small homeland, the role of sightseeing and the sightseer in local communities, heritage, and its interpretation in sightseeing based on regional education. The field exercises consist of a cognitive
part – getting to know the tourist space of Poland in regional terms (knowledge) – and the application of the methodology of sightseeing and heritage interpretation in the transmission of sightseeing knowledge (skills). Conclusions: The study course should include elements of both traditional and modern sightseeing; the curriculum should be based on the idea of holistic sightseeing and take into account its full dimension; students should be prepared to popularize sightseeing in tourism and to undertake sightseeing activities in local communities of small homelands; field exercises should be an integral part of the sightseeing course.
